AVA MEDIA LAB

The Association for Visual Arts (AVA), Chattanooga’s nonprofit visual arts center, has opened the city’s first state-of-the-art digital media center, AVA’s Media Lab, located at the lower level, River St. entrance of AVA’s headquarters on the Northshore at Coolidge Park.

The AVA Media Lab will empower students, adults, and emerging and professional artists interested in using advanced technologies to market their work and create contemporary visual art. It will also serve as an incubator for Chattanooga’s creative individuals wanting to develop techniques for photo and video editing, Web site design, and other related skills for personal and professional expression. With the growing trend toward electronically-generated and documented visual arts, AVA identified a strong need among the city’s existing and emerging artists for access to the most technologically advanced digital media systems available – a resource beyond the means of most artists. AVA is meeting the need by adding classes and workshops for technologically-based visual art, video, and photography, and is making the Media Lab available to its member artists and the community.

ART SPEAK is an on-going informal lecture series designed to stimulate dialogue among artists and art, while advocating relevant topics in the visual arts. This year’s theme is:
Current Exploration of Contemporary Art and its Impact on Culture.
Participating artists and arts professionals are being asked to explore the notion of relevance, irreverence and opulence and how such concepts pertain to contemporary art. In a larger sense, we are asking participants to speak to the impact that the art world is having on culture, and in turn, how work being created today reflects contemporary society. Is there a common thread? Has our field of vision shifted, and how has our perception of our surrounding environment changed?
